The police watchdog has dropped an investigation into three former senior Greater Manchester Police officers over their ‘command and control’ of an armed operation during which a father-of-two was shot dead.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said today two of three independent investigations arising from the fatal shooting of Anthony Grainger it launched have now concluded.
Mr Grainger, from Salford, died on March 3, 2012, when he was shot in the chest by a single bullet from a Heckler and Koch MP5 sub-machine gun fired by a police marksman known only as Q9.
The 36-year-old, who was living in Bolton, was hit as he sat behind the wheel of a stolen red Audi in a car park in the village of Culcheth, near Warrington.
It was announced by the IOPC last year that the officer who fired the shot would not face disciplinary action.
