A man has been shot dead by armed police in Birmingham. The victim, a man in his 50s, died at the scene on Wheeleys Lane near Five Ways.
West Midlands Police said it was part of an intelligence-led operation that was carried out shortly before 5am this morning (Friday). The area is currently cordoned off and enquiries are underway.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now investigating and police body-cam footage has been recovered.
This is the fourth time since 2017 that West Midlands Police has discharged a firearm on operations. It is the second fatal shooting this year involving the force’s armed officers after 31-year-old Sean Fitzgerald was shot once in the chest during an incident in Coventry in January.
Before 2017, nobody had been shot by West Midlands Police since 2000.
