Tippa said; “Following further discussions with Ken Fero of the United Families & Friends Campaign / UFFC, we have decided to maintain monthly or one-off donations to the National Family Fund. Although donations have not yet peaked as we hoped, we felt it incumbent on us to maintain the drive so the original aims of this fund may be realized.

“The funds raised up to March 2018 will be retained until we reach a target of at least £4,500, at which point the fund will be opened up for its first round of small grants to affected families.

In addition we will seek to collaborate with Migrant Media, UFFC and others to organise a series of national events, conferences and live entertainment to raise the bulk of income for the National Family Fund going forward.”

On 7th September 2015, the twelfth anniversary of the death of Mikey Powell who was killed in the custody of West Midlands Police, campaigning news group 4WardEver UK, launched The National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund appeal.

The Fund was to be developed in conjunction with the Friends of Mikey Powell Campaign, The United Families & Friends Campaign (UFFC) and Migrant Media. Organisers also acknowledged the late campaigner, Pauline Campbell, who died in May 2008.

The fund will to be the first permanent national resource of its kind for those affected by deaths in custody, making small grants available for families and their campaign groups across the UK to provide practical domestic assistance, to further the work of their own campaigns or to assist them in engaging in other local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives.

Breakdown of funds that have been raised between September 2015 and October 2017:

Crowdfunder (18 donors) = £671.46
4WardEver Film Club (ticket % sales) = £309.18
One-off (5 donors) = £360.00
Other one-off (various donors) = £770.98
Monthly Direct Debits (4 donors) = £107.00

Grand Total – £2,218.62

Moving Forward Strategy:

The forward strategy will consist broadly of two components;

National Events
A shift towards co-producing free and ticketed awareness & fundraising events nationally, working with a wide range of campaign groups, artistes and organisations.

These will take the form of film screenings, sponsored activities, music, arts/theatre, conferences, lectures and more.

Connecting Families
A core objective that remains, namely; ‘to assist families & campaigns to engage in other local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives.’

Once again, working with a wide range of campaign groups, artistes and organisations, we will seek to develop funded projects providing practical support to children and families affected by custody deaths.

Using self-generated resources from our events and activities we will seek to support family campaigns attend/access events, courses or meetings by covering (in part or whole) associated costs or expenses.
